Selling or handing down an old phone: removing OKX from it properly

An old phone can still hold an OKX login, an authenticator and saved passwords. A checklist for Polish users before selling a phone on OLX or giving it to family, so the next owner cannot reach your account.

New phones arrive with every contract renewal, and the old ones end up on OLX, in a drawer or with a younger sibling. The OKX app on that phone may still be logged in. The authenticator app may still generate your codes. The browser may remember your password, and the phone itself may be listed in your account as a trusted device. A factory reset solves much of this, but only if it happens after you have moved everything you need, and only if you also tidy up the account side. Doing it in the right order takes about twenty minutes.

Move your second factor before you wipe anything

If your authenticator app lives on the old phone, set it up on the new phone first. Use the app's own transfer feature, or in OKX open Security, choose to change the authenticator and bind the new device. Generate a code on the new phone and log in with it to prove it works. If you use a passkey stored on the old phone, add a passkey on the new device or a hardware key, then remove the old one. Only when the new phone works end to end should you touch the old one.

Log out and check the account side

On the old phone, log out of the OKX app and uninstall it. Then, from the new phone or a computer, open the device or login management area under Security and remove the old phone from the list of devices and active sessions. Check the passkey list as well, since a passkey can stay registered after the phone is gone. While you are there, look at the withdrawal address list and API keys; an old phone is a good reminder to review both.

Clear the phone itself

Remove your Google or Apple account from the phone so activation lock does not block the buyer, then perform a full factory reset from the system settings. Remove the SIM card and any memory card. If you used the phone for banking or BLIK, log out of those apps first as well. A phone shop's quick wipe in the store is not something you can verify, so do the reset yourself and check that the setup screen appears on restart.

After the handover

For the next week, keep an eye on OKX login alerts and the email linked to your account. If anything unexpected appears, change your password from a trusted device and review the active sessions again. Record the date you retired the phone and its model in your security notes; if a support conversation ever asks when your devices changed, you will have the answer ready instead of guessing.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Bind your authenticator or passkey on the new phone and test a login before wiping the old one.
  • Remove the old phone from OKX devices, sessions and the passkey list.
  • Remove your Google or Apple account and factory reset the phone yourself.
  • Watch OKX login alerts for a week after selling or giving away the device.
