Before your first OKX perpetual trade: margin, leverage and stop orders in plain terms

An explanation of the OKX futures order panel for newcomers in Poland, covering margin modes, leverage, take-profit and stop-loss fields, and the liquidation estimate.

Switching from spot to perpetual futures on OKX takes one tap, but the two products behave very differently. A spot purchase can fall in value and recover; a leveraged futures position can be closed automatically long before any recovery arrives. That automatic closure, liquidation, is the core risk to understand. This guide walks through the OKX futures panel field by field so that a first trade, if you decide to make one at all, is sized and protected deliberately.

Open the futures panel and pick a margin mode

From the Trade tab, switch to Futures and choose a perpetual contract. At the top of the order panel sit the margin mode and leverage controls. Isolated mode ring-fences a specific amount for the position; cross mode uses your whole trading balance as backing. For a first trade, isolated keeps the maximum loss visible. Tap the mode to switch, and note that OKX may ask you to confirm account mode settings the first time you trade derivatives.

Choose leverage with the liquidation estimate in view

Adjust leverage and enter a small size. The panel or position preview shows an estimated liquidation price. Raise the leverage and the estimate moves towards your entry. Ask yourself how often the market has moved that far in a single day recently. If the answer is regularly, the leverage is too high. Remember that OKX may require you to pass a derivatives knowledge check before trading; take it seriously rather than clicking through.

Set take-profit and stop-loss on the order

Tick the TP/SL option on the order form and enter both prices before placing the trade. A stop-loss placed well before the liquidation estimate means you choose the exit. OKX lets you base triggers on the last price or the mark price; the mark price is less affected by brief spikes on a single venue, so read the help article describing the difference before choosing.

Watch funding and close calmly

Perpetual contracts exchange periodic funding between longs and shorts. The current rate and countdown sit above the chart. Check them before holding overnight. When closing, use the Close button on the position line or a limit order; review the realised result in order history and note it in your own records, including any funding charged.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Switch the OKX futures panel to isolated margin before sizing a first perpetual position.
  • Increase leverage only while watching the liquidation estimate and compare it with recent daily moves.
  • Tick TP/SL on the order form and place the stop well before the liquidation estimate.
  • Check the funding countdown and rate above the chart before keeping a position open overnight.
