Attaching take-profit and stop-loss to an OKX spot buy before you place it

OKX lets you add take-profit and stop-loss levels while placing a spot order. How the attached orders behave, how to fill the fields sensibly and how to check that they are active after the buy fills.

A lot of spot trading in Poland happens in the evening after work: you buy, close the app and go to sleep. If the plan was to sell at a target or cut the loss at a certain level, that plan lives only in your head unless you put it into the order. On OKX's spot order form you can attach a take-profit and a stop-loss to the buy itself, so the exit orders are created automatically once the purchase fills. It is a small feature that removes a large source of regret, provided you understand exactly what it does.

Finding the fields on the order form

Open the spot trading screen for the pair, choose Limit or Market and look for a TP/SL checkbox or toggle below the price and amount fields; the wording can vary by app version. Ticking it reveals fields for a take-profit trigger price and a stop-loss trigger price, and sometimes a choice between executing at market or at a limit price once triggered. Fill in your buy first, then the two levels. If the toggle does not appear, check that you are on the spot tab rather than margin or a bot screen.

How the attached orders behave

The take-profit and stop-loss are not live while your buy is still waiting. They activate when the buy fills, and if it fills partially they usually cover only the filled amount. When one of them triggers, the other is normally cancelled, so you do not sell the same coins twice. A trigger set to execute at market will sell at whatever price is available, which in a fast drop can be noticeably below your stop level. A limit execution protects the price but may not fill at all if the market moves past it.

Choosing levels you can defend

Base the stop-loss on a price that would prove your idea wrong, such as below a recent low, rather than on a round number everyone else uses. Base the take-profit on a level you would actually be happy to sell at. Write both down with your reason before placing the order. Check the trading fee schedule for how the exit fills are charged; a market-triggered exit is usually a taker fill, while a limit exit resting in the book may count as maker.

Confirm they exist after the buy fills

Once the purchase completes, open Orders and look under the open orders or the TP/SL or algo order tab, where attached exits are often listed separately from normal limit orders. Confirm the trigger prices and amounts are what you intended. If you later sell part of the position manually, check whether the attached orders adjusted or need cancelling. Before a holiday or a busy week, review them again, because an exit you forgot about can sell coins you had since decided to keep.

Scenario checkpoint

  • Tick the TP/SL option on the spot order form before placing the buy, not afterwards.
  • Note whether each exit will execute at market or at a limit price once triggered.
  • Write down the reason for each level before you submit the order.
  • Check the TP/SL or algo order tab after the buy fills to confirm both exits are active.
